Advance Care Planning

The British Columbia Government defines Advance Care Planning as:

“Advance care planning is the process of thinking about and writing down your wishes or instructions for present or future health care treatment in the event you become incapable of deciding for yourself. The Ministry of Health encourages all capable adults to do advance care planning.”

Hopefully our lives are filled with nothing but good things coming our way.  However, reality is that bad things do happen to us.  One of the most difficult scenarios that we can face is becoming incapacitated in some way that prevents us from being able to speak for ourselves and make our wishes known.  In the case of medical scenarios, being able to express our wishes as to what we want our quality of life to be and what kinds of treatments we want to prolong our lives (or not), is very important.  Leaving this to chance, or the opinions and values of others is not at all ideal.

This is where an Advanced Care Plan comes into play.  Having a document prepared that speaks for you and expresses your wishes ensures that you live your life on your terms.  A good thing!

The FSJ PCS offers an Advanced Care Planning Workshop that guides you through the process of completing an Advanced Care Plan thoughtfully, legally and in such a way that this document is available to those that must see it at your time of need.
